Emma Arkell
Style consultant and Personal Shopper
I’ve worked in fashion retail for many years where styling is an everyday part of the job. This can be anything from helping a customer choose an outfit for a special occasion to a complete restyle, always guiding the customer towards the best colours, styles and sizes for them.
I’ve really grown to love this part of the job. It gives me huge pleasure to see a customer look at themselves in a completely new light just by giving them a few simple styling tips; and it’s wonderful to see them leave the shop with a new-found confidence, having really enjoyed their shopping experience.
It was this element of my work that led me to set up The Wardrobe Whisperer. It’s so important that we feel good about ourselves and a key part of this is liking how we look and feeling confident in our clothing choices. Knowing what to wear undoubtedly becomes trickier as we age but getting older definitely doesn’t mean getting frumpy. There’s still plenty of fun to be had with the buying and wearing of clothes well into our 40s, 50s and beyond, dressing to suit our age and stage of course, while still looking stylish and elegant.
After working with many women in this age group over the last few months, I have made it my focus to support women going through the various stages of menopause. This is a time when so many women experience physical changes, whether it’s a change to their shape and size, a change in hair or skin colour or mostly all of these! As if Menopause didn’t give us enough things to deal with, finding that most of your wardrobe no longer fits just adds insult to injury! Of course the temptation at this point is to hold onto everthing, whether it’s for sentimental reasons, mourning the you that once was, or because of a misplaced hope that one day they’ll all fit again! The reality is they won’t; and rather than have a wardrobe full of clothes that you can’t wear and that only remind you of yourself BM (Before Menopause), my advice is to embrace the new you and fill your wardrobe with clothes that fit and suit you. This way, you can get up and get dressed every morning knowing that you look great, and go about your day feeling happy and confident in how you look. This small thing makes such a difference to how we feel overall and that’s why I’ve felt it so important to help women navigate this tricky age and stage. If you too would like to feel happier and more confident in how you dress and look, please get in touch via the Contact page - I’d be only too happy to help.
